Nordic Lullabies

Yeeeeeah. This is also what I was having a love-hate relationship over for the last two months. It was a roller coaster of emotion for me with this trash. I swear I re-recorded each song at LEAST ten times because my voice sucked so bad, but now I can finally sleep knowing it is done.

I will say though, making the video itself was a LOT of fun! I wanted to make it easier to know who was singing when (because obviously…it’s just me singing so it’s hard to tell), and so I took a drawing of the Nordics I’ve been working on in my spare time and made this! I think it looks kind of cool. Overall, I’m proud of this, even if I sort of hate it like a family member you can’t get rid of.

OK. So, here are the songs I used!

Nuku nuku nurmilintu (Finnish)

bíum bíum bambaló (Icelandic)

Gjendines bånsull (Norwegian)

sofðu unga ástin mín (Icelandic)

I couldn’t find any Danish or Swedish lullabies, tbh, which made me a little sad. But it also would’ve made this video like…twenty minutes long :’D

Also, I really wanted to title this “Lullabies for a Viking” but…the only Nordics who were like, legit Viking countries were Norway, Sweden, and Denmark…and there aren’t any Swedish or Danish lullabies here and I guess that doesn’t really make any sense to call it viking lullabies. At least, to my knowledge. I’m not exactly a Nordic expert :’D

~*LYRICS*~
(Finnish)
Nuku Nuku Nurmilintu
Väsy, väsy, västäräkki.
Nuku nurmelle hyvälle,
Vaivu maalle valkialle

Nukuta, jumala, lasta.
Makauta, mariainen.
Kuro kiisan silmät kiinni
Anna unta aamuun asti

(bíum bíum bambaló) Nuku, nuku, nurmilintu
Väsy, väsy västäräkki.
Nuku, kun mie nukutan,
Väsy, kun mie väsytän.

(Icelandic)
Bíum bíum bambaló,
Bambaló og dillidillidó
Vini mínum vagga ég í ró
En úti biður andlit á glugga

Þegar fjöllin fimbulhá
fylla brjóst þitt heitri þrá,
Leika skal ég langspil á
Það mun þinn hugan hugga

Bíum bíum bambaló/Nuku, nuku nurmilintu,
Bambaló og dillidillidó/Väsy, väsy, västäräkki.
Vini mínum vagga ég í ró/Nuku nurmelle hyvälle
En úti biður andlit á glugga/Vaivu maalle valkialle

Þegar veður geisa grimm,
Grúfir yfir hríðin dimm,
Kveiki ég á kertum fimm,
Burt flæmi skammdegisskugga

(Finnish)
Nuku, nuku nurmilintu,
Väsy, väsy, västäräkki.
Nuku nurmelle hyvälle,
Vaivu maalle valkialle.

Lintu tuopi liinahapaijan,
Haapana hyvän hamehen.
Kaskeloinen korvatyynyn,
Pääskynen peäalusen.

(Icelandic)
Bíum bíum bambaló (bambaló)
Bambaló og dillidillidó (dillidillidó)
Vini mínum vagga ég í ró
En úti biður andlit á glugga

(Norwegian)
Barnet legges i vuggen ned,
stundom gråter og stundom ler.
Sove nå, sove nå, i jesu navn,
Jesus bevare barnet.

*whisper*
[Leika skal ég langspil á
Það mun þinn hugan hugga]
[Sove nå, sove nå]
[Bambaló]

(Icelandic)
Sofðu, unga ástin mín,
úti regnið grætur.
Mamma geymir gullin þín,
gamla leggi og völuskrín.
Við skulum ekki vaka um dimmar nætur

Bíum bíum bambaló,
Bambaló og dillidillidó
Vini mínum vagga ég í ró
En úti biður andlit á glugga

(Finnish)
Nuku, nuku nurmilintu,
Väsy, väsy, västäräkki.
Nuku nurmelle hyvälle/Leika skal ég langspil á (Icelandic)
Väsy, kun mie väsytän
(^this was technically my own combination of lyrics, rofl)

Nukuta, jumala, lasta.
Makauta, mariainen.
Kuro kiisan silmät kiinni/Sove nå, sove nå(Norwegian)
Anna unta aamuun asti

Pääskynen peäalusen

~*END*~

And in case anyone was wondering, the Icelandic bits were the hardest for me to read, especially since I don’t know how to speak it at all. I had actually recorded most of it when I realized that two ‘ll’s make a ‘tl’ sound. So yeah. In the America’s Bedtime bit where the Nordics show up, you can actually hear so many pronunciation errors it’s not even funny. I’m sure there are still plenty in this, but dang…the first round was awful. :’D

Did you sing this? Amazing! I love your singing. But the icelandic one will always be creepy. Even when i was younger i thought it was creepy. 2:242:31. Úti bíður andlit á glugga means and outside waits a face near the window. ;-; scaryyyy

Ooh ooh ooh I absolutely adore this! Nuku nuku nurmilintu~ It would be cool if you could one day make a version with Christmas carols. I can only help you with Finnish (and maybe some Swedish) songs but I think it would sound astounding.

Some calm and pretty Finnish Christmas carols are:
    Varpunen jouluaamuna
    Konsta Jylhän joululaulu
    Sydämeni Joulun teen
    Tähti tähdistä kirkkain
    Tonttu
    Tulkoon Joulu
    Hei mummo

One that would absolutely work with Finnish + Swedish would be Taivas sylissäni/Himlen i min famn..

Sorry, you don’t have to take this seriously in any shape or form.. As a Finn I just got super excited about Christmas just now lol ^^

this actually lulled me to sleep during a long, 14 hour car ride when I wasn't feeling well near the last leg of the drive. I love this with my whole heart, it's so soothing and, honestly, absolutely gorgeous. <333

I want to learn 1 of the nordic languages but idk which one. First I wanted to learn swedish bc of that song named Karamell dansen (plz don't judge me), then I wanted to learn finnish bc of Nightwish, then icelandic bc of The World's hardest kareoke song, then I heard this mix's norwayish lullaby… and not too much after this I became to know The Promise by Globus…. and people telling me learning languages' hard.

Hey Echoflower! I adore all of your videos and the work you’ve put into them. I can’t believe how amazing your music is too! I was wondering if it would be alright for me to compose music based off of this song so that I could do it with friends. Not for a video, but just for fun and maybe for a school music festival. I’d love to hear back from you! Thank you so much and keep up the spectacular work!!!

  18. December 5, 2018 at 7:38 am

hi! I really had to comment that I love your finnish pronunciation, I really had to listen hard a few times to figure out if you're a fellow finn or not 😂 also I really love your voice and whole song all together! well done! actually I have plans on making a ASMR video of my own in the future where I'll at least try to sing the finnish lullaby you used here~ (try as in try not to sound like a dying animal or something) that is, once I get to making any videos in the first place.. ^-^" but it would be an honor to me if you'd check it out as soon as I get it done and published, after all you pretty much inspired it! but anyways, keep on the good work and have a good day!

  19. December 5, 2018 at 7:38 am

Okay, when i first heard this i thought you were a fluent finnish speaker until i heard you sing the word "västäräkki" because your "t" is more like a "th" sound, like in the english language (like pronouncing 'the'). But this is really beautiful and i enjoyed it!
But seriously your finnish pronounciation is so good! And sorry if there are any grammar mistakes…(i am from finland after all :D)

  20. December 5, 2018 at 7:38 am

    This is incredible!

  21. December 5, 2018 at 7:38 am

    You can sing so well.

  22. December 5, 2018 at 7:38 am

Your pronounccation is quite good, though I found it a bit sad there wasn't a Danish lullaby.

Just a recommendation if you need a Danish lullaby; Solen er så rød mor.

  23. December 5, 2018 at 7:38 am

This video has been the only thing that’s been able to finally relax and fall asleep this week. Thank you so much for making this! It’s so beautiful and I can’t wait to see what else you’ll be making in the future!

  24. December 5, 2018 at 7:38 am

Also, do you have the lyrics to this? If you do, would you be able to send them to me possibly through Wattpad or something of the like?

  25. December 5, 2018 at 7:38 am

  26. December 5, 2018 at 7:38 am
