DIY Metal-Based Coffee Table w/ NO WELDING!! | Modern Builds

Take the Care/of quiz at: http://bit.ly/2Cqu6Zw and use the code “modernbuilds” for 25% off your first order!

Today on Modern Builds I’m experimenting making a metal coffee table base without any welding. I had a lot of fun trying this idea out and learned a lot in the process. I know it’s not as strong as a welded table, but is a great option for the casual DIY’er that doesn’t have the resources to weld. Make sure and watch the demo/explanation towards the end of the video before criticizing or critiqueing please. ALSO, I beefed up the written article for this project with a 3D model and step by step plans, so make sure and check that out if you plan on building this coffee table for yourself.

Welding is definitely a skill that should be learned.

Wow, this is really informative! What about the feet? I want to make sure are clean and flush with the metal and anti-scratch on the bottom.

I think this design would be wobly regardless. Looks very sleek. Maybe make a smaller version?

Hey Mike! I would like to build a desk with a metal base but I can't welt. Do you think your method will be strong enough in the end to hold a wooden plate on top and some standard desk stuff like books? Will it wobble a lot?

Hey! You seem like a nice fellow, and I'm really concerned about your lungs. Please wear a respirator while creating dust (especially metal), and consider ways to keep your shop clean with a dust collection system that connects to the dust ports on your machines. I'm increasingly aware of how bad wood and paint dust can be for your nose and lungs and would hate to see you get sick later.

That’s great! But who doesn’t love welding!?

You can buy strong plastic joiners that go straight into the tubing which makes it even easier

    Hi Mike,
Good presentation and demonstration! Enhanced with your fair explanation about the pluses and the minuses of this project.

    A good DIY project.
Legs of double as much cross section and a few minor modification will make it simpler and as strong as welded steel one most for practical purpose, including jumping 🙂

  17. January 27, 2019 at 12:06 am

I'm a welder and i am tired of welding tablrs and stands. Thanks for the idea and i could make my own non weld frame and make it also stronger.

  18. January 27, 2019 at 12:06 am

With only one screw for a joint, it might wobble a bit…. that's the difference with the welded joints – they're stronger…still a brilliant project….

Can you make a diy furniture without any fancy professional machines but with only a hand held jigsaw because most DIY people don't buy and keep big expensive machines in their homes.
